In a chilling development in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, Sonam Raghuvanshi, who stands accused of murdering her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, had earlier warned her mother of ‘serious consequences’ if she was forced into the marriage. This disturbing detail was shared by Raja’s elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, who claims that Sonam had explicitly said to her mother:
“You will see what I do to that person. You all will have to bear the consequences.”
Sonam’s Secret Relationship With Raj Kushwaha
According to Vipin, Sonam had a secret relationship with Raj Kushwaha, a 21-year-old employee at her family business. Despite her protests and emotional plea to her mother about her love for Raj, her family pressured her into marrying Raja to maintain social norms and family reputation. Vipin shared that he was informed by a family acquaintance that Sonam had confessed to her mother about the affair:
“Sonam had already informed her mother about her affair with Raj. She said she did not want to marry Raja. Her mother objected and persuaded her to marry within the society.”
The Marriage and the Murder
Sonam (24) and Raja (29) got married on May 11, 2025, in Indore. Just 12 days later, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, Sonam allegedly orchestrated Raja’s murder. The couple went missing on May 23, after checking out from a homestay in Nongriat village. Initially assumed to be lost during a trek, the situation took a dark turn when Raja’s decomposed body was found on June 2, dumped in a deep gorge 20 km from the homestay. A machete was discovered nearby, indicating a brutal killing.
The Hired Killers and the Murder Plot
Police investigations revealed a horrifying plot. Sonam had allegedly hired three contract killers:
- Akash Rajput (19)
- Vishal Singh Chauhan (22)
- Anand Kurmi
The trio reportedly travelled with the couple from Bengaluru to Meghalaya to execute the murder. The plan involved killing Raja during a trek, and Sonam allegedly stayed at the scene to ensure he was dead. Reports also suggest that Sonam had offered Rs. 20 lakh to the killers, although this is yet to be officially confirmed.
Lover Raj Kushwaha’s Role
Raj Kushwaha, Sonam’s alleged lover, claimed he backed out of the murder plan at the last minute. However, police are investigating his involvement deeply. It is believed that Sonam and Raj even stayed together in a hotel after Raja’s murder before she returned to Indore.
Sonam’s Surrender and Police Arrests
After evading authorities for over two weeks, Sonam surrendered to the police in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, on June 9, 2025. Her surrender came shortly after the arrest of the three hired killers and Raj Kushwaha from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
Ongoing Investigation
As of now, the police continue to unravel the extent of premeditation behind this gruesome murder. With confessions and digital evidence being examined, the case continues to reveal chilling new layers. Raja’s family, especially his brother Vipin, demands the harshest punishment for all those involved.
This murder case, rooted in deception, betrayal, and cold-blooded planning, has shaken the nation and sparked conversations about forced marriages, family pressure, and the dark side of personal relationships.
