The infamous Meghalaya murder case has taken another dramatic turn. Just weeks after the brutal killing of Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon, his wife and prime accused, Sonam Raghuvanshi, has put forth a new spin on the narrative. This time, she claims that her husband died trying to save her from an attack.
Raja’s Tragic End: Murder or Heroic Sacrifice?
Sonam Raghuvanshi, who has already confessed to and denied involvement in the crime multiple times, now alleges that Raja lost his life while protecting her from men who tried to snatch her jewellery. In her latest statement to the police, she said, “We were both attacked. He was trying to protect me when he was killed.”
However, this version of events contradicts previous police findings and raises further suspicion about her credibility. Sonam has been accused of orchestrating her husband’s murder with the help of her alleged lover and three contract killers.
A String of Changing Statements
From the beginning, Sonam has given multiple versions of what transpired in Meghalaya. She initially denied involvement, later admitted to planning the murder, and now claims she was a victim of an attack that killed her husband. When asked how she reached Ghazipur after the incident, Sonam claimed she had lost consciousness and had no recollection of the journey.
Family Reactions and Allegations
Raja Raghuvanshi’s mother, Uma, continues to maintain that her son was lured under false pretences. Meanwhile, Sonam’s father, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, accused the Meghalaya police of framing his daughter and demanded a CBI investigation.
The Chilling Murder Plot
According to the police investigation, Sonam planned Raja’s murder with her lover, Raj Kushwaha—an employee at her father’s plywood factory. Together with three accomplices—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Akash Rajput, and Anand Kurmi—the group allegedly executed a cold-blooded murder.
Raja and Sonam got married on May 11, 2025. Their trip, initially planned for Kamakhya Devi Temple, was later changed to Meghalaya. On May 23, while trekking in Nongriat village, Raja went missing. Days later, his decomposed body was found near Weisawdong Falls, with sharp weapon injuries. A machete believed to be the murder weapon was recovered nearby.
Arrests and Investigation
Following Raja’s death, Sonam and her accomplices went into hiding. She was later arrested at a dhaba in Ghazipur, while Raj was nabbed in Madhya Pradesh. The other three were tracked down in Uttar Pradesh.
Public Reactions and Media Attention
The case has caught national attention due to its horrific nature and continuous twists. Social media is abuzz with outrage, speculation, and calls for justice. Many are questioning Sonam’s ever-changing story and the real motive behind the crime.
Final Thoughts
Sonam Raghuvanshi’s latest claim—portraying herself as a victim and Raja as a saviour—only adds more complexity to an already shocking case. With each new version, public trust dwindles, and the need for a thorough and impartial investigation becomes more urgent.
