Premier fast bowler Mohammed Siraj had an emotional homecoming at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, but this time in a different jersey. Having spent seven years with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Siraj made his return donning the blue jersey of Gujarat Titans (GT). The emotions ran high for the star pacer as he delivered a match-winning performance, dismantling RCB’s batting lineup with a spell of 3/19 in four overs. His outstanding bowling effort earned him the Player of the Match award.
Siraj was a key player for RCB from 2018 to 2024, appearing in 87 matches and taking 83 wickets at an average of 31.45, with his best figures being 4/21. Despite his consistency and impact, the franchise decided against retaining him ahead of the 2025 mega auction, leading to his move to Gujarat Titans.
Reflecting on his performance and emotions, Siraj admitted that playing against RCB at Chinnaswamy was an overwhelming experience.
“I was a bit emotional. I was here for 7 years, changed jersey from red to blue. There was some nervousness and some emotion but the moment I got the ball in my hand, it was full-on,” Siraj said after receiving the Player of the Match award.
Dominating the Powerplay
Siraj wasted no time in making an impact against his former team, striking early in the powerplay. He dismissed Devdutt Padikkal and Phil Salt, both key batters for RCB, to put the opposition under immense pressure. His aggression and energy were visible as he celebrated each wicket passionately, even pulling off football legend Cristiano Ronaldo’s iconic ‘Siu’ celebration.
“I am Ronaldo’s fan and hence the celebration,” Siraj explained when asked about his energetic post-wicket reactions.
The dismissal of Padikkal and Salt set the tone for Gujarat Titans, as RCB struggled to recover from the early blows. The stadium, which once cheered for Siraj’s fiery spells in RCB colors, was left in silence as he wreaked havoc on their batting lineup.
Missing the Champions Trophy & Using the Break Wisely
Siraj’s journey in 2025 has not been without challenges. He missed out on selection for the Champions Trophy squad, which initially came as a disappointment. However, the fast bowler chose to view it as an opportunity to work on his game and improve himself during the break.
“I had been playing consistently, but during the break I corrected my mistakes and worked on my fitness,” he shared.
Rather than letting the setback affect his confidence, Siraj focused on refining his skills, enhancing his fitness levels, and preparing for the IPL season with renewed energy. His hard work paid off as he made an immediate impact for Gujarat Titans, proving his mettle as a top-class pacer once again.
Learning Under Ashish Nehra & Ishant Sharma
The transition from RCB to Gujarat Titans also meant working under new leadership. Siraj spoke about his interactions with Gujarat Titans’ head coach Ashish Nehra and how he has been guiding him to enjoy his bowling without overthinking.
“Once I was picked up by Gujarat Titans, I spoke to Ashish Bhai. He (Nehra) tells me to go enjoy your bowling and Ishu (Ishant) Bhai tells me what line and length to bowl. My mindset is to have belief and then the pitch does not matter,” Siraj revealed.
Having a coach like Nehra, who was one of India’s finest left-arm pacers, has been a great advantage for Siraj. Additionally, playing alongside veteran pacer Ishant Sharma has given him valuable insights into bowling strategy and execution. The duo has been instrumental in guiding Siraj to make better decisions on the field and enhance his effectiveness as a bowler.
Siraj’s Future with Gujarat Titans
With his stunning performance against RCB, Siraj has cemented his position as a key bowler for Gujarat Titans this season. His ability to bowl with pace, movement, and accuracy makes him a crucial asset for the team.
As the IPL season progresses, all eyes will be on Siraj to see if he can continue delivering match-winning performances and lead Gujarat Titans to victory. While the separation from RCB was bittersweet, Siraj has embraced his new challenge with Gujarat Titans, proving that his passion and dedication to the game remain stronger than ever.
For fans who have followed his journey, Siraj’s return to Chinnaswamy may have been an emotional one, but it was also a testament to his resilience and commitment to excellence. His journey in IPL 2025 has only just begun, and if his first performance is anything to go by, he is set to make this season one to remember.
