We kept shouting 'Mahi bhai, don't go'. He didn't even bother to turn back: Truth behind MS Dhoni's IPL controversy

MS Dhoni, the embodiment of calmness under pressure, stunned the cricketing world in 2019 during a high-stakes IPL match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). Known as “Captain Cool,” Dhoni rarely lets emotions cloud his judgment, but that night at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur was an exception. What led to his dramatic outburst on the field? Here’s the full story.

The Situation: A No-Ball Controversy

Chennai Super Kings needed eight runs to win off the last over, with Mitchell Santner and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease. Rajasthan Royals’ Ben Stokes bowled a full-toss that was initially called a no-ball by umpire Ulhas Gandhe for being above waist height. However, square-leg umpire Bruce Oxenford overruled the decision, retracting the no-ball call.

This decision caused confusion and frustration in the CSK dugout. Both Santner and Jadeja protested, but Oxenford was resolute. As CSK’s chances hung in the balance, a visibly agitated Dhoni, who had just been dismissed, stormed onto the field, arguing with the umpires in a rare display of fury.

“Mahi Bhai, Don’t Go”

Mohit Sharma, a CSK teammate, recently shared behind-the-scenes insights about that unforgettable night. Speaking on the ‘2 Sloggers’ podcast, he said:

“We were sitting outside; he came out fuming after getting out. He was angry, and the situation was such that he shouldn’t have gotten out because he usually doesn’t give away his wicket in such matches. He came and sat down. And suddenly, it happened. He asked, ‘Didn’t the umpire declare it as a no-ball? Who bowled?’ We were sitting there, 2-3 people. First, he asked us. Then we said that he (umpire) raised his hand. After that, he didn’t stop. He went inside, and the rest you know.”

Despite Mohit and others urging Dhoni to stay put, the CSK captain had made up his mind. He stormed onto the field to confront the umpires, pointing fingers and expressing his displeasure over the no-ball reversal.

What Happened Next

CSK eventually clinched victory, with Santner hitting a six off the last ball. However, Dhoni’s outburst stole the limelight from the thrilling finish. Reflecting on the incident, Mohit revealed more details about what transpired after the match.

“He came straight to me and said, ‘Mohit, come here. Bring the laptop, show me.’ Then I told the analyst to show Mahi bhai the replay. So, he showed it to him, and then he said, ‘It’s a no-ball.’ He was like, ‘It doesn’t matter to me if you win or lose the match from that (no-ball). It’s not about that. But you cannot change your decision under someone else’s pressure. That’s all he was saying.’”

Dhoni’s Perspective

Years later, Mohit believes that Dhoni regrets his actions from that night. “Mahi bhai in these situations is like, ‘It happened in the heat of the moment, what can we do now?’ Even he says that it shouldn’t have happened,” Mohit added.

The incident, though controversial, showcased Dhoni’s fierce sense of justice and his unwillingness to let errors or inconsistencies slide, especially in critical moments.

A Moment That Defined the IPL

While the incident was chaotic, it also highlighted Dhoni’s human side—a passionate leader standing up for his team. Though he likely wishes to erase that memory, the spectacle remains one of the most talked-about moments in IPL history.

For fans, it’s a reminder that even the coolest heads can lose their temper when fairness is at stake. As Mohit aptly put it, “It shouldn’t have happened. But it did—and was fun to watch.”
